Professor Ian F. Akyildiz opens Moscow Telecommunication Seminar

On 4 July 2018, Prof. Ian F. Akyildiz opened the series of Moscow Telecommunication Seminars with a bright talk on the Internet of Space Things.

He presented a new technology of satellite communications fruitful for monitoring remote areas, terrain monitoring including North and South poles, intelligent global transport management. He showed how the innovative solutions in such hot areas as Terahertz Communications and Software Defined Networks (SDN) & Network Function Virtualization (NFV) can enrich the network of CubeSats, very small satellites. Being under development, the presented technology has many challenges. Prof. Ian F. Akyildiz mentioned a list of open issues on how to make communication more global, scalable, flexible and resilient. Such problem statements can be used as the basis for future research projects and papers, which is very important for numerous academic participants of the Seminar.

The talk caused a lot of burning questions from both academic and industrial participants. The lively keen, fruitful discussion lasted for another hour.

The seminar was followed by the lobby talks of several research groups presented at the Seminar. They discussed industrial, academic and educational collaboration.

Prof. Ian F. Akyildiz is the Ken Byers Chair Professor with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, Director of the Broadband Wireless Networking Laboratory and Chair of the Telecommunications Group. Dr. Akyildiz is also a Megagrant winner in Russia. He is the Megagrant lead researcher at the Institute for Information Transmission Problems (Kharckevich Institute), Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, Russia since January 2018. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Computer Networks (Elsevier) Journal since 2000 and the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Ad Hoc Networks Journal (2003) both published by Elsevier. Dr. Akyildiz is an IEEE FELLOW (1996) and an ACM FELLOW (1997). He received numerous awards from IEEE and ACM. Due to Google scholar, his papers received over 103.5+K citations and his h-index is 113 as of July 2018. His current research interests are in the Internet of xThings, 5G Wireless Systems, Software Defined Networking, Nano-Scale Communications and Wireless Sensor Networks in Challenged Environments.

The Moscow Telecommunication Seminar (http://wireless.iitp.ru/seminar/) is a regular series of events held in IITP RAS weekly/biweekly on Wednesdays. The Seminar aims at driving innovation in nearly every aspect of communications, providing an opportunity for researchers to present and exchange significant and innovative contributions and ideas in the field of networking and closely related areas. Leading researchers from all over the world are invited to share their recent results on advanced technologies, systems, and infrastructures that are continuing to reshape the world and provide all users with access to an unprecedented spectrum of high-speed, seamless and cost-effective global telecommunications services. The Seminar provides an opportunity for students and young scientists to receive updates on latest technologies and expand professional and social networking.
