Title: Study of power saving methods in wireless local area networks of the Internet of Things

Speaker: Ekaterina Stepanova, IITP RAS

Abstract: Power saving is one of the most important issues for Wi-Fi networks, so the Wi-Fi standard includes a number of mechanisms to reduce energy consumption. Target Wake Time (TWT) and Wake-Up Radio (WUR) are the most advanced power save mechanisms. These mechanisms work by scheduling power saving station (PS STA) service periods so that during the remaining time, STAs can turn off the Wi-Fi radio to save power. However, in the disabled state, the PS STA cannot receive network information frames and therefore cannot synchronize its clock with the AP’s clock. Therefore, the clock drift can significantly affect the efficiency of TWT and WUR. The talk presents the main results of the thesis, which is dedicated to study the efficiency of TWT and WUR power save mechanisms in heterogeneous Wi-Fi networks with the clock drift.

Bio: Ekaterina Stepanova is a researcher at the Network Protocols Research Laboratory since 2017, and at the Wireless Networks Laboratory since 2018 at IITP RAS. She is currently pursuing PhD degree in telecommunications under the supervision of Dr. Andrey Lyakhov. Her research interests include Internet of Things networks, power save mechanisms, analysis and developing of wireless networks protocols, modeling of wireless networks.
