Title: Research and development of methods to improve energy efficiency and noise resistance of 5G mobile broadband communication systems

Speaker: Grigory Ermolaev, Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod

Abstract: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) requires that fifth-generation (5G) communication systems meet higher requirements for throughput, latency and network connectivity stability, which has immediately increased the complexity of both the user devices and base stations themselves and the digital processing algorithms used to receive and transmit data. Another key change in 5G communication systems is the move to higher frequency bands where wider bandwidths are available. These changes have led to a significant increase in the energy consumed by the user’s mobile device, and have also affected the rate of signal attenuation as it propagates from the mobile device to the base station and vice versa, which affects the noise resilience of the overall system. In the seminar, we will describe the models and scenarios used to simulate 5G communication systems at the system and physical levels, and present methods to improve energy efficiency and noise resilience developed for 5G communication systems.

Bio: Grigory Ermolaev received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Fundamental Computer Science and Information Technologies from Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod in 2016 and 2018, respectively. From 2018 to 2022, he was a postgraduate student at the Radiophysics Department of the Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod. Since 2015, he actively participated in the standardization of 5G NR communication systems in the 3GPP consortium. His scientific interests include channel noise tolerant coding, energy saving of user equipment, coverage expansion of wireless mobile communication systems.
