[SEMINAR] April 6, 2021 – Nikola Zlatanov – Applications of the communications theory framework to machine learning and to blockchain

We are happy to invite you to the next talk of Moscow Telecommunication Seminar which will be held at 1.00 PM (MSK, UTC+03:00), on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, in Zoom. Click here to show the seminar start time in your timezone.

Title:  Applications of the communications theory framework to machine learning and to blockchain

Speaker: Dr. Nikola Zlatanov, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.

Abstract: In this talk, we will present two applications of the communications theory framework, one in machine learning and the other in blockchain technologies. Specifically, we will present how the problem of classification can be represented equivalently as a communications problem. This equivalent representation can enable the vast body of knowledge and intuition from communications and information theory to be used for tackling the open problems in machine learning. Next, we will present how the problem of inserting reliable off-chain data into the blockchain can also be represented as an equivalent communications problem.

Bio: Nikola Zlatanov was born in Macedonia. He received the Dipl.Ing. and Master degree in electrical engineering from Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Macedonia in 2007 and 2010, respectively, and his PhD degree from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada in 2015. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. His current research interests include wireless communications, information theory, and machine learning.
Dr. Zlatanov received several scholarships/awards/grants for his work including UBC’s Four Year Doctoral Fellowship in 2010, UBC’s Killam Doctoral Scholarship and Macedonia’s Young Scientist of the Year in 2011, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship in 2012, best journal paper award from the German Information Technology Society (ITG) in 2014, best conference paper award at ICNC in 2016, and ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) in 2018.
Dr. Zlatanov serves as an Editor of IEEE Wireless Communications Letters (since Sep. 2020). He served as an Editor of IEEE Communications Letters in the period 2015-2018.
